To memorialize the cows who were injured and killed when a truck carrying them crashed—throwing over a dozen animals onto I-80 and resulting in a DUI conviction for the driver—PETA has just placed a sky-high message near the crash site proclaiming, “See the Individual. Go Vegan.

“Cows died in agony as a result of this reckless and preventable crash, while the survivors were likely rounded up and taken to be killed for their flesh,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s memorial encourages anyone disturbed by the thought of these terrified animals suffering on the roadside or ending up under the slaughterhouse knife to go vegan.”

At the slaughterhouse, workers shoot cows in the head with captive-bolt guns, hang them up by one leg, and cut their throats—often while they’re still conscious. Each person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals every year. PETA notes that there were at least 76 crashes or fires involving trucks carrying animals used for food last year.

The group’s billboard is located on I-80, a mile west of the intersection with Route 7.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information on PETA’s investigative newsgathering and reporting, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
