“Bear Cubs Are Not Photo Props!” That’s the message that PETA and Utah Animal Rights Coalition supporters will flash Saturday at a Yellowstone Bear World photo op event—hosted by the American West Heritage Center—in which strangers pay to swarm around and snap photos of tiny bear cubs who should be with their mothers. The groups are slamming Yellowstone Bear World for its history of breeding bears in order to use cubs in public events and shipping cubs off to other roadside zoos or exotic-animal wholesale dealers, such as the notorious “Joe Exotic” of Tiger King.
When: Saturday, April 9, 12 noon
Where: Outside the American West Heritage Center, 4025 S. Hwy. 89-91, Wellsville
“Before they’ve even opened their eyes and seen their mothers, these cubs are taken away from them to be exploited for profit at noisy events,” says PETA Foundation Associate Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Debbie Metzler. “PETA reminds everyone that cubs belong with their mothers and that this kind of profiteering at their expense should have ended long ago.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
