On Wednesday morning, PETA supporters in owl masks will sound a wake-up call at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) President Ron Daniels’ campus house by playing owl screeches to drive home the point that helpless owls are suffering under his watch. In crude brain-mangling experiments on barn owls, JHU experimenter Shreesh Mysore implants electrodes in owls’ brains, clamps their eyes open, forces them to stare at dots, and bombards them with visual and auditory stimuli for up to 12 hours at a time. When the owls are no longer of use, he kills them. The supporters will also hold a vigil, laying down flowers for the slain birds.
When: Wednesday, April 6, 9 a.m.
Where: 3400 N. Charles St., Baltimore
“President Daniels can’t hear the anguished screeches of the owls imprisoned and tormented in one of Johns Hopkins’ laboratories, so we’re bringing their cries to his home,” says PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “PETA urges Daniels to put an end to these ghastly skull-opening experiments immediately.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
