Even after the film Seaspiracy got the world talking about the massive cruelty and destructiveness of the fishing industry, sea life is on the menu. And PETA’s calling out chef Wolfgang Puck, urging him to create a completely vegan menu for the Governors Ball as the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards have done.
“Given the growing number of celebrities who have made the conscious and compassionate choice for animals and the environment to go vegan, continuing to serve fish is distasteful,” writes PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “Now is the time to show the world your beautiful vegan dishes and do your part to stop animal suffering.”
PETA notes that each person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals a year, such as the salmon and tuna included on this year’s menu. When removed from their watery homes, these sensitive and intelligent animals begin suffocating immediately. Many are still conscious when their bodies are hacked apart. Abandoned fishing equipment also kills and mutilates millions of sea animals, because more than 700,000 tons of fishing gear is left in the ocean every year.

Dear Mr. Puck:
Greetings from PETA! We’ve always appreciated that you have often made vegan food available for the growing number of vegans in Hollywood, including Joaquin Phoenix, Jessica Chastain, and Billie Eilish, but to hear that you’re planning to serve fish at the most star-studded event of the year is a huge letdown.
One of the most talked-about films last year was Seaspiracy, and as a result, many stars spoke about their disgust for the fishing industry. Given the growing number of celebrities who have made the conscious and compassionate choice for animals and the environment to go vegan, continuing to serve fish is distasteful.
In 2020, awards shows like the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards went completely vegan. That same year, in an interview about your vegan menu choices for the Governors Ball, you said, “And the whole world is going to say, ‘Okay, if that is what vegan is, then I’m going to be a vegan.’” Now is the time to show the world your beautiful vegan dishes and do your part to stop animal suffering. Having such a highly publicized dinner be completely animal-free in an effort to stop animal suffering and fight the climate catastrophe would remind people of the hugely positive benefits of going vegan.
