Photos: In Ukraine, People Are Risking Everything to Take Animals Out, Bring Dog Food In

As the crisis in Ukraine continues, PETA has released photos of refugees and their beloved animals being helped by rescuers from PETA entities, who arrived at the Ukraine border with Poland soon after the war began. In just over two weeks, these rescuers have transported more than 600 animals out of the country, including driving almost 700 miles from war-torn Kharkiv to Poland, and delivered over 132,000 pounds of dog and cat food to areas in Ukraine—including 40,000 pounds to Odesa, where animals in shelters and on the streets are starving. Here are some photos of the dogs, cats, and guardians the PETA-backed team has helped.

“Dogs and cats depend on humans, so it’s imperative that we work quickly to get them out of danger, reunite them with their families when that’s possible, and not let them starve,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “Whether our rescuers are helping animals escape Kharkiv or Kyiv or supplying housing to the people who refused to leave their animals behind, PETA entities are doing all they can to help.”
