It won’t take a detective to make sense of this crime scene. On Thursday, as part of “Veganuary,” a group of nearly nude PETA supporters will lie “dead” at a busy intersection, inside chalk outlines of fish, pigs, sheep, and cows. “Evidence markers” by their “bodies” will detail how animals suffer and die in the meat industry and offer statistics about the scale of the slaughter—facts like “Over 110 million pigs were slaughtered in the U.S. in 2020” and “Fish are killed by suffocation or by cutting their gills while they’re still conscious.”
When: Thursday, January 27, 12 noon
Where: At the intersection of S. Miami Avenue and S.E. Seventh Street, Miami
“Just like us, other animals feel pain and fear and value their lives,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA will be walking passersby through the horrors of the meat industry in the hope that they’ll keep animals off their plates and out of slaughterhouses.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
