Legislature’s Quiet Gutting of Egg Bill Faces Messy PETA Pushback

On Thursday, PETA supporters will pelt the Massachusetts State House with smelly “egg” water balloons in a bid to stop Gov. Charlie Baker from signing a bill reducing the voter-approved S. 2603—a bill due to take effect in just two weeks that would have raised welfare standards for egg-laying chickens in the state—to the same old standard practices that it was meant to stop. With the display, the group will register its members’ disgust at the lengthy list of changes to the bill that capitulate to egg-industry interests and would render S. 2603 pointless.

“Under the bill, hens were to receive the smallest amount of relief from abject cruelty, but now even that pittance is to be snatched away by this deeply cruel industry,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA urges Gov. Baker not to kowtow to egg-industry greed and to honor the will of the voters by vetoing the bill—and we urge consumers to refuse to buy eggs, for which chickens suffer mightily.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
