Labcorp Cited for Careless Mishandling of Monkey: PETA Statement

Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding a just-posted inspection report documenting a critical, repeat violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act at Labcorp:

Labcorp has a pattern of injuring monkeys and breaking their bones—in addition to forcing test chemicals into their stomachs—and should lose its license to keep animals. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has just confirmed that staff have broken the limb of yet another monkey through careless and apparently violent mishandling. Documents obtained by PETA show that this is the second time in two years that staff incompetence has led to broken bones and the fourth violation of animal protection laws for limb injuries.

The clinical descriptions of mishandling of animals at Labcorp mirror the mistreatment of monkeys that PETA documented in 2005 at a now-shuttered facility in Vienna, Virginia, when the company was called Covance. Workers there punched, slapped, and violently shook monkeys. Federal authorities cited and fined Covance for its mistreatment of these animals, but it appears that even though the company’s name has changed, its disdain for minimal animal welfare protections hasn’t.
