Visitors to Corning’s annual winter festival, Sparkle, on Saturday are in for a spectacle: Local members of Students Opposing Speciesism (SOS)—a PETA-backed, youth-led revolt against the notion that other animals are ours to exploit—will shake up the event by asking festivalgoers to say neigh to horse-drawn carriage rides. The group will screen video footage to show attendees how disasters strike when skittish horses are forced to pull heavy loads through chaotic city streets.
When: Saturday, December 4, 3:40 p.m.
Where: 58 W. Market St., Corning
“Horses often collapse after dragging carriages, and these easily startled animals have even darted into traffic,” says PETA SOS Senior Director Rachelle Owen. “By skipping the carriage rides and sticking to animal-free activities like Christmas caroling and visits with Santa, Sparkle attendees can spread a little peace on Earth and goodwill to all.”
SOS shares PETA’s motto: “Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.”
