In time for the fall shopping season, street artist Praxis has joined forces with PETA for a flyposting campaign launched across the city, which blasts Urban Outfitters for failing to go leather-free and features a shopper pulling skin off a cow. The thought-provoking street art targets the brand’s Navy Yard headquarters and stores near the University of Pennsylvania and Rittenhouse Square Park, urging passersby to recognize the individual behind every leather accessory.
“This can’t-be-missed campaign brings shoppers face to face with the cows who die for leather,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “By working with the edgy Praxis on this artwork, PETA is pushing Urban Outfitters to protect cows by selling only vegan materials.”
The street art blitz is part of PETA’s international campaign urging Urban Outfitters and all its brands, including Free People and Anthropologie, to ditch materials from animals. Numerous PETA investigations in multiple countries—including at ranches supplying JBS S.A., the largest leather processor in the world—found that cows are routinely beaten and electroshocked and that calves are branded on the face. In India, handlers force exhausted cows to keep walking on a long, grueling trek to their deaths by rubbing hot peppers and tobacco into their eyes.
