Below, please find a statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding PETA’s international campaign encouraging President Joe Biden not to hire another “dinosaur” to lead the National Institutes of Health now that Francis Collins is leaving the agency at year’s end. PETA’s dinosaurs have followed Biden to Washington, D.C.; Rome; and now Glasgow, following stops in Baltimore; Kearny, New Jersey; Hartford, Connecticut; and Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Dinosaurs are roaming the Earth again, and their latest stop is the global climate summit in Scotland. They want to make sure that President Joe Biden hires a visionary director to lead NIH, one who embraces state-of-the-art, high-tech research, rather than another “dinosaur” who prefers to fund outdated animal experiments. Beagle torture and making monkeys lose their minds are just two examples of NIH’s ethical, fiscal, and scientific failures. The agency squanders more than $19 billion annually on animal studies—despite clear evidence that harming animals is not providing cures for what ails humans. PETA urges the president to put the U.S. back in the forefront of good science by immediately embracing our Research Modernization Deal for both humans and animals. Just as with the climate crisis, this can’t wait.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information on our newsgathering and reporting, please visit PETA.org or follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
