National Institutes of Health (NIH) experimenter Elisabeth Murray and her neighbors are in for an earful on Saturday, when PETA supporters in monkey masks will gather outside her home and hit “play” on a recording of distressed monkeys in an NIH laboratory. PETA is calling for an end to Murray’s “monkey fright” experiments, in which she cuts into monkeys’ heads, injects toxins into their brains, surgically implants “head posts” directly into their skulls to keep their heads stock-still for hours, deprives them of food and water to force them to cooperate, and terrorizes them with realistic-looking snakes and spiders. She has received nearly $50 million in taxpayer funding since 1998—and hasn’t produced one treatment or cure for humans.
When: Saturday, September 25, 12 noon
Where: Elisabeth Murray’s home
“If Elisabeth Murray had a heart, the screams of the monkeys inside her laboratory would echo in her dreams,” says PETA Vice President Dr. Alka Chandna. “PETA is bringing the message home to her—and her neighbors—that the pointless monkey terror experiments must end.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
