In recognition of—and out of respect for—the up to 200,000 fish who died after a local Tyson Foods facility discharged thousands of gallons of wastewater, leading to the contamination of the Mulberry Fork of Black Warrior River (and prompting a $3 million settlement announced earlier this month), PETA will be placing a giant billboard in the area pointing out who’s rightly responsible for their deaths: anyone who still hasn’t gone vegan.
“If everyone were vegan, these fish wouldn’t have been poisoned by Tyson’s factory farm waste and scores of others wouldn’t be gutted alive on fishing boats,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s billboard encourages everyone to show compassion to aquatic animals and those on factory farms by leaving them off our plates.”
Although the meat, egg, and dairy industries are responsible for the suffering and violent deaths of billions of farmed animals, fish and other animals are also casualties of these harmful industries. Animal agriculture is a leading cause of ocean dead zones, water pollution, species extinction, and habitat destruction—and the United Nations states that a global switch to vegan eating is imperative to combat the worst effects of the climate crisis.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—notes that many faux-fish options are available today, such as Gardein’s Golden Fishless Filets, Plant-Based Tuna from Good Catch, New Wave Foods’ new plant-based shrimp, and Sophie’s Kitchen’s Vegan Crab Cakes.
