Any day is a good day to earn a place in heaven, and that’s the message on PETA’s new billboard—which features a “Vegans Welcome” sign dangling from the pearly gates—that popped up on July 5 near dozens of area churches.

“Jesus would weep at conditions for animals on the squalid farms that treat God’s creations as unfeeling and disposable,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA’s billboard reminds people, Christian or otherwise, that choosing not to kill to eat flesh is an act of mercy.”

In Genesis 1:29, God provides humans with “every seed-bearing plant” and “every tree that has fruit with seed in it” as food, with no mention of slaughter. Yet many of His creatures, who feel pain as much as we do, suffer from the moment they’re born. They endure painful mutilations such as castration and tooth-clipping, other forms of abuse and neglect on factory farms, and transport through all weather extremes to the slaughterhouse, where they’re subjected to a terrifying death.

The billboard is located at 4500 Prospect Ave., close to Berean Fellowship Church, Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church, Congregation Tifereth Sforad, St. Thomas Missionary Baptist Church, Allen Chapel AME Church, Mount Ararat Baptist Church, and many others.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers a free vegan starter kit. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
