PETA to Mango Board: ‘UnaPEELing’ Animal Experiments Are Nothing to Celebrate

The National Mango Board has been celebrating National Mango Month throughout June, but the group’s rotten animal experiments are nothing to cheer.

PETA first exposed the National Mango Board for paying experimenters to torment and kill at least 160 mice and rats in painful tests in an attempt to promote human health claims when marketing mangoes to consumers. The pointless tests include injecting animals with cancer cells, force-feeding them, and killing and dissecting them.

Not only are these experiments cruel, they’re also utterly fruitless for producing usable data that can help humans—and the National Mango Board knows this fact.

In its 2023 Mango Nutrition Toolkit for Health Professionals, the fruit organization admitted that its animal experiments don’t translate to humans:

These findings are preliminary and only pertain to rats. Consequently, no conclusions can be drawn regarding effects in humans, and more human investigations are needed.

This revelation is something PETA has repeatedly pointed out to the group, as humans have vastly different anatomy and physiology from those of mice and rats. Instead of killing animals in gruesome experiments, researchers could have used safe and effective human studies and other advanced, non-animal methods to yield superior, human-relevant results.

Mangoes have a long history of safe human consumption. Not a single animal needs to die in laboratories so that seedy corporations can simply try to boost their sales. If the National Mango Board wants to celebrate the fruit, it should start by immediately tossing out all experiments on animals.

What You Can Do

Please take action by urging the National Mango Board to adopt a policy against conducting, funding, or commissioning experiments on animals:

Stop Mango Tests

Then please urge the U.S. Department of Agriculture to stop forcing farmers to pay fees that fund these cruel and pointless experiments:
